We have recently come back from a long weekend in the Lakes District and have had a really great time. Whenever I am booking trips away I tend to do a trawl for a hotel that ticks all the boxes for myself and Dave as well as the kids. We like staying in quality, good value hotels where we will be well looked after, but also if we’re taking the kids we want them to be welcomed too.
I opted for the Regent Hotel in Waterhead Bay which is situated at the very top of Lake Windermere and a few minutes away from Ambleside. The hotel was brilliant and ticked all of the boxes, including having good off street parking, perfect for parking Bob the Camper Van in. As soon as we arrived we were well looked after, even getting help taking the bags up to the room. I had booked a family room which comprised of a good sized bedroom for the adults, a lovely ensuite bathroom with a good shower (essential) and then an adjoining room with bunk beds for the kids. This meant that there was plenty of space for everyone.
The hotel had just been renovated in parts following the terrible floods late last year and had modern and fresh décor, while still having a cosy feel with an open fire in the reception. One of the reasons we opted for the hotel was because it had a swimming pool which is great if you have kids. The pool was a little on the small side but the kids got me up early on two mornings to go in the pool, and it was perfectly fine for them.
The bar in the hotel was a relaxed place with comfy sofas where we could relax after a long day exploring the Lake District. All the staff were really friendly and made our evenings very enjoyable. We ate in the restaurant every night of our stay, which is quite unusual for us as we tend to find local restaurants to eat, but the food was outstanding. There wasn’t a kids menu, which is fine for us as Miles & Ethan don’t really like the typical chicken nugget / fish finger type menus, but we were able to create their meal from what was available on the menu, cutting out anything that they may not like. The menu changed daily which was a treat, apart from Ethan’s disappointment that the chocolate tart that he had on the first evening wasn’t there the next night!
Breakfast was a great way to start the day and it was excellent that they served breakfast until 12 noon. Often you feel quite rushed in hotels that you have to be up and dressed in time for the breakfast service and if you get in late you feel that you don’t have time to enjoy it. All the breakfasts were cooked to order and came out piping hot, rather than the luke warm buffet breakfast that most big hotels opt for, with lots of toast and coffee available. We ate so much at breakfast before our days out that we didn’t need any lunch.
On Easter Sunday after breakfast the kids got an Easter Egg each from the hotel which was a really lovely treat, and made the kids day as the “Easter Bunny” had only left them a crème egg each in their room.
All in all, a very good family friendly hotel situated on the edge of Lake Windermere, with stunning views all around and conveniently located only a short distance from the main attractions.
